big question. how are they going to use the money? >> senator, we heard president obama say in an interview that if congress can't get anything done and we go over the fiscal cliff, that plan "d" essentially is to have another vote on january 4th when the new congress comes in, and that would just be a straight up or down vote on extending tax cuts for middle class families making up to $250,000 a year. do you think that's what happens? >> i'm hoping that we resolve this today to give the american people some certainty. the president doesn't seem too eager to actually get involved and find solutions to deal with the number one problem facing our country. if you do what the president just proposed and raise taxes on those folks, it helps fund the government for seven days. it doesn't deal with our fundamental spending problem in this country. bottom line is the president is the only one with a pen who can sign into law something and he ought to be very involved with making sure that he gets something that he will sign that will pass both a republican controlled house and a democrat

insanity. we spent $2 billion on an election that nothing changed. same congress, same senate same president. so should we expect change? i'm not that sure. >> therefore the re-election of president obama was a good thing or bad thing you think? >> well, i don't ever get into politics as you know, charlie. i've always said i'm not right wing or left wing, i'm for the whole bird. >> evidently, god wanted president obama, he had a purpose for him, to be re-elected. do i follow that? what's the disconnect between those thoughts? god has a purpose -- >> we don't know god's purpose in a lot of events. i mean, i was at the notre dame/usc game on saturday night. people were praying for both sides to win. i don't think god has an opinion. >> god didn't care? >> god didn't have an opinion in that. >> but god does have an opinion in your life -- >> god's more interested in your character than your career. you're not taking your career to heaven. you are taking your character. so really what you do is not nearly as important as who you've become. and i would say god is extremely interested in

new poll finds 50% of americans think president obama and congress will reach a deal in time but that number has dropped in the past week. president obama plans to cut short his family vacation in hawaii leaving for washington late tonight. yesterday, he spoke to troops at a marine corps base in hawaii. >> on behalf of michelle and myself and our whole family we do this every year. this is where i was born so we come back for the holidays but one of our favorite things is always coming to the base on christmas day and having a chance just to meet you, those of you who have families here and to say thank you for the extraordinary work and service that you guys do each and every day. >> chip reid is in washington with more on the budget talks. chip, good morning. >> good morning, rebecca. as you mentioned, the president plans to cut short his vacation in hawaii and fly back to the white house later tonight, arriving about noon thursday. here in washington there has been no communication between republicans and democrats about how to avoid going over the cliff. before the christmas

survival. congress has five days to strike a deal before the end of the year deadline. president obama is on his way to washington this morning while senators are coming back to capitol hill. chip reid is at the capitol. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president arrived back in washington in a little bit more than an hour. the senate comes back tonight and the house it could be a couple of days. there is not the sense of urgency you would think there would be with a critical deadline looming. some members of congress admit they may well just go over the fiscal cliff and deal with it in january after the new congress is sworn in. leaving his family behind to continue their vacation without him, president obama boarded air force one early this morning and headed for washington to deal with unfinished fiscal cliff business. with just five days until the combination of automatic tax increases and spending cuts that could send the economy back into recession, mr. obama wants congress to take the lead in getting the job done. the senate convenes later today and senate majority lead
